- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk (adjust for desired consistency)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract (optional for added flavor)
For Decoration:
- Red and green decorating gels or royal icing
- Edible sugar pearls or red candy balls
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Holiday-themed sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).
- Beat in the eggs one at a time. Add vanilla and almond extracts, and mix until fully combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until a soft dough forms.
- Cover and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes to make it easier to handle.
2. Shape and Bake:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Use a flower or snowflake-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies.
- Place them 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden (do not overbake).
- Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
3. Make the Glaze:
- In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons of milk. Stir until smooth. Add more milk, a few drops at a time, to reach a spreadable but thick consistency.
- Optional: Add a dash of extract for extra flavor.
4. Decorate:
- Spread or pipe the glaze over each cookie in a snowflake or petal-like pattern.
- Use red and green icing or gels to draw delicate lines outward from the center.
- Place two or three red candy pearls in the center of each cookie.
- Lightly dust with powdered sugar for a snowy effect.
- Add sprinkles if desired. Let the icing set completely before storing.
Storage Tips:
- Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
- You can also freeze the undecorated cookies for up to 1 month.
